This presentation is part of the 5th Annual Bridging Communities Conference: Finding Connection and Building Communities in a Virtual Environment. Ticket price includes access to all Bridging Communities speakers throughout the month of November including the keynote on November 24, 2020.

Our Program: The Prenatal Outreach Support Team (POST) is a collaborative program with the Calgary Police Service and the Calgary and Area Child Advocacy Centre. This program is a preventative initiative which was created from the Alberta Vulnerable Infant Response Team (AVIRT) to support pregnant individuals. The program consists of a police officer, nurse, and outreach and is located in the Calgary and Area Child Advocacy Centre with the Calgary Police Service Child Abuse Unit.

Our Presentation: We will focus on highlighting the intersection of domestic violence and pregnancy in the Calgary region. We will then examine the impacts of domestic violence during pregnancy from both a policing and medical lens. We will review examples of why risk mitigation is crucial in supporting people in (or exiting) an intimate partner relationship where violence has been a factor.

We will then examine how a multi-disciplinary, collaborative approach can help reduce the risk towards the client using an effective triaging process as well as how to allocate resources to those cases where the risk of violence is high.

Speakers: Sandi Pineda-Selva, Calgary and Area Child Advocacy Centre and Constable Andrew Morton, Calgary Police Service
